How skins payouts work
How are golf skins payouts calculated?
A skin is won by taking a hole outright: lowest score, no ties. The money side runs one of two ways. In a buy-in pot, everyone antes the same amount and the pot divides by the number of skins claimed: four players at $20 each is an $80 pot, and if five skins are won, each is worth $16. In a fixed-value game, every skin is worth a set dollar amount and winners are paid per skin, no pot required.
Should skins be played gross or net of handicap?
Skins can be played on gross scores or net of handicap. Net keeps higher-handicap players in every hole, and most weekend Leagues play net so the whole group has a live chance at every skin.
Carryovers, ties, and unclaimed skins
What is a carryover in a skins game?
When a hole is tied, most groups carry the skin over: the next hole is worth two skins, then three, until someone wins a hole outright and collects the stack. Groups that play no-carryover simply kill the tied skin and the next hole starts fresh at one.
What happens to unclaimed skins after 18 holes?
If the 18th ends with skins still on the table, your group decides up front: the unclaimed skins are either lost (the pot only pays claimed skins) or split among the day's winners. Agree before the first tee; it's the one rule that starts arguments on the patio.
